Compost system (pick one)
- Tumbler — faster, cleaner for small yards and HOA-adjacent living.
- Stationary bin — cheaper, great if you have space and patience.
- Worm bin — apartment-friendly castings for containers.
Make compost actually work
- Browns (leaves, cardboard, shredded paper) + greens (kitchen scraps, coffee grounds) in rough balance.
- Chop big pieces. Keep it moist like a wrung sponge — not a swamp.
- A compost thermometer tells you if the pile is working or just sitting.
Soil tests and amendments
Before you dump bags of mystery “garden booster,” test. A basic home kit or a local extension office soil test beats guessing pH and nutrients.

- Worm castings
Finish and use
- Sieve unfinished bits back into the pile; finished compost looks like dark crumbly cake.
- Top-dress beds and containers lightly; compost is food, not fill dirt for empty raised beds alone (pair with the raised-bed kit).
